And how does it compare to other types of ceremonies? At our beautiful country house wedding venue in Devon, we’re proud to be a licensed civil ceremony venue, and we often get asked by couples how it works, what to expect, and whether it can still feel romantic. Spoiler: it absolutely can. Here’s everything you need to know.
What is a Civil Ceremony?
A civil ceremony is a non-religious, legally binding wedding conducted by a registrar. It can take
place in a registry office or in an approved venue like Pynes House.
Unlike a religious service, a civil ceremony is entirely secular – no hymns, prayers or religious
readings – but it can still be heartfelt, emotional and beautifully personal.

How Does it Work?
1. You’ll give notice of marriage at your local registry office.
2. You’ll email the Devon registry service to book, and then again ahead of the ceremony to
finalise the ceremony script and any personal vows or readings.
3. On the day, the registrar will conduct your ceremony at Pynes House – indoors or outdoors
– and you’ll sign the legal marriage register.
We work closely with the Devon registrars and are happy to guide you through the whole process.
Can We Still Make it Personal?
Absolutely. While you can’t include religious references, you can add your own vows, readings,
music and symbolic touches. We’ve seen couples walk down the aisle to string quartets, include
their siblings in readings, or simply exchange quiet, powerful promises or even humorous ones!

Where Can a Civil Ceremony Be Held at Pynes?
Pynes House has multiple licensed spaces, including:

What’s the Difference Between Civil Ceremonies and Celebrant Ceremonies?
This is a common question. The key difference is legal validity.
• A civil ceremony is legal and binding, performed by a registrar.
• A celebrant-led ceremony is not legally binding on its own – you’ll need to do the legal
part separately (often at a registry office) before or after.
Some couples choose both: a quick legal ceremony in the morning after staying in our beautiful
overnight accommodation, and then a celebrant-led event that’s more personal and creative.
