A Modern Take on a Classic English Wedding – Andrew & Ursula

Andrew & Ursula’s modern take on a classic English wedding is always a pleasure to look back on. Taking place on a warm and atmospheric autumnal day, they were lucky enough to play croquet in the sunshine and enjoy canapés and champagne in our vibrant rose gardens. Read on to hear more about their beautifully timeless and romantic day, which perfectly matched the classic elegance of Pynes House.

Some Words From the Bride…

Ursula Says

Pynes House was by chance, the first venue we found and the most beautiful venue we saw when deciding upon potential wedding venues. We were drawn to the traditionally classic English estate with its grand ballroom, long tree-lined drive and surrounding rose gardens and fountain.  We were also charmed by the house’s anecdotal association to the author Jane Austen and her novels. It was also apt that it was located near Exeter, where my husband grew up.

The Outfits…

I wore a traditional long-sleeved gown by Suzanne Neville and nude open Aquazurra heels. My bridal party wore dusty pink bridesmaid dresses by Asos. The groom and ushers wore morning suits with matching blue ties (my husband’s favourite colour) and light brown double-breasted waistcoats.

The Wedding Day…

On the Friday evening beforehand, our bridal party and family joined us for a rehearsal dinner in the Pynes House Drawing Room.

We had a traditional Saturday wedding ceremony at the nearby Newton St Cyres Church, with around 100 of our family and friends. It was followed immediately by celebrations at Pynes House. While we had our bridal party photographs taken, our guests were invited to enjoy canapés and champagne in the gardens – we were lucky to have beautiful September sunshine and high temperatures.

We were then presented as a wedded couple at the confetti throw, where we walked through a corridor of our guests. After this, we mingled with our guests, enjoyed the canapés and champagne, and played croquet in the gardens in the sunshine. We had acoustic guitar music from The Waves Collective playing in the background. We moved into the house in the late afternoon for the wedding breakfast and speeches, followed by dancing.

Our bridal party and family stayed with us at the house on Friday night, as well as Saturday and Sunday. They were there until we left for our honeymoon late on Sunday morning.

“Enjoy every moment, it passes as quickly as everyone says it does and becomes a memory you will always cherish.”

The Look…

A wedding guest suggested the wedding was a modern take on classic. The colour scheme was champagne and off-white, with touches of faded pink. We chose classic white, off-white and romantic light pink roses for the church and Pynes House.

The Food & Entertainment…

Following the cutting of the cake, our guests found their seats at the tables. These were named after our favourite places (such as holidays and other locations close to our hearts). We held our wedding breakfast in the ballroom.

We then had speeches and concluded with the wedding cake in the drawing room, served with a selection of berries and coulis. Then it was on to the band (Bill Ding and the Skyscrapers), drinks and dancing.

Most Memorable Moment…

Exchanging vows was a particularly special moment. We also enjoyed the canapés in the sunshine, the cutting of the cake, and our first dance. The spectacular location and scenery in the Devon sunshine added beautifully to the occasion.
